Marshall Baseball Wins District Championship!
The Redhawks defeat Pennfield in the Semi-final and Win in 10 innings over
Olivet to claim the first District Title in baseball since 2007.
In the semi-final Marshall combined clutch hitting with clutch pitching to
move on to the District Championship game. Matt Lubis, Kole DeLand,
and Zack Zacharski each had 2 hits with each hitting solo home runs.
Rickey Nye also had 2 hits and scored a run. Evan Asselin picked up
the win on the mound as he kept the Panthers in check for 5 innings of
shut out ball. Zack Zacharski came in to complete the shut out by not
allowing a hit over the final 2 innings.
In the championship game Olivet scored two early runs and then held
the Redhawks scoreless thru 6 innings. In the top of the 7th with
one out Cooper Middleton reached base on an Eagle error. Brandon Face
came into run for Middleton. Zack Zacharski then singled advancing
Face to 2nd base. Brad Feasel ran for Zacharski. Then with 2 outs
Logan Austin singled to bring in Face in and keep the rally alive.
Feasel advanced to 2nd base. That brought Calvin Fulmer to the plate
who promptly singled sharply to right field tying the game at 2 as
Brad Feasel crossed the plate and Logan Austin took 3rd. Jarrett
DeLand then doubled to knock Austin in to give the Redhawks the lead
3-2. However, Olivet came back to tie the game and send it into extra
innings in the bottom of the 7th. Both teams were held scoreless in
the 8th and 9th innings. Then in the top of the 10th, with one out
Kole DeLand doubled. Then on a Justin Hankey caught foul ball down
the left field line DeLand advanced to 3rd base. Trenton Fuller then
brought Kole home on an infield single to give the Redhawks a 4-3 lead
heading into the bottom of the 10th. The Olivet lead off batter got
on base after being hit with a pitch. Then after a fly ball
corralled by center fielder Rickey Nye, Fuller then induced a ground
ball to 3rd basemen Angelo Lerma who threw the ball to 2nd basemen
John Nash who threw the ball to 1st basemen Jarrett DeLand to complete
the game ending double play to make Freshmen pitcher Trenton Fuller
the pitching winner and the MHS District Champs. Zacharski logged 5
innings on the mound, giving up 2 runs and K’d 5. Logan Austin
pitched 2 innings giving up an unearned run and struck out 2. And
Trenton Fuller pitched the 2 final innings holding the Eagles hitless.
The I-8 and MHSAA District Champs Marshall (24-12) now advances to
Stevensville-Lakeshore Saturday for the MHSAA Regionals to play against Otsego at noon.
