A trip to the MHSAA Division 2 State Finals is exactly what Marshall Boys Golf had on their radar when the season began on March 12th. So it was no surprise that on June 8-9 you would see the Redhawks tee it up against the best 18 teams in the state at Bedford Valley GC for the Championship.
Ideal conditions on Friday, put the Redhawks in 10th place after great performances by Matt Flynn with an even par round (72), Konnor Voigt posted his best round of the season (79), Garrett Voigt also posting a low round for the season (80), and Haydon Chapman and Carl Quist both shooting 85 and 86 respectively.
Day 2 was a different story weather wise, as the golfers had to contend with Mother Nature. The field was only on the golf course for 10 minutes before thunder and lightening pulled the players off the golf course. After a 6 hour rain delay, the rules committee deemed the course ready for play! Perseverance, patience, and adversity would ultimately be the golfers goal.
Matt showed great patience as he fired a +2 (74) posting a 2 day total of 146 and a position on the podium finishing 9th in the State! Konner and Garrett both fought patience as the day continued into the evening with both posting an (83) for a 2 day total of 162 and 163 respectively. Haydon took to the course determined to persevere from his first round and that he did, posting a (77) for a two round total of 162. Carl was ready for action but the golf gods tested his adversity with unfortunate “rub of the green” situations. He posted a (90) on day two and concluded with a two round total of 176. After all the scores were posted into the night, Marshall put together a consistent two day 633 (316-317) Although not want they hoped for they finished respectfully in 12th place. The season was an amazing year for the varsity sport.
Coach Phil Murphy and Coach Bob Voigt are very excited for the future of the young varsity team as it consisted of 1 senior, Nick Mumaw – 1 junior, Carl Quist – 8 sophomores, Jon Bomia, Haydon Chapman, Matt Flynn, Jacob Martinson, Joey Saari, Julian Strand, Garrett & Konner Voigt. Congratulations to all of the players contribution throughout the entire season.
