Boys Varsity Baseball · Marshall Boys Varsity Baseball Takes Two From Lumen Christi to Keep Pace in the I8


On a sunny afternoon at Joe Cooper Field the Redhawks played I8 conference foe Lumen Christi in a doubleheader.
Game 1 saw the Titans take the lead in the top of the first 1-0.   Marshall put up 2 runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead 2-1.    In the top of the 3rd inning 2018 Division 2 All-State Pitcher Evan Asselin went down with an injury.   Odie Butler replaced Asselin on the mound and the Redhawks didn’t lose a beat.   Leading 6-1 going into the top of the 7th Lumen Christi exploded for 5 runs to tie the game.   No runs were scored over the next 4 innings by either team.     The Redhawks pushed across the winning run in walk off fashion in the bottom of the 12th as Rickey Nye scored from 3rd on a sharp ground ball by Odie Butler.    This made Trenton Fuller the winning pitcher on the mound as he pitched 4 innings of hitless relief while striking out 5 batters.    At the plate MHS was led by Cooper Middleton’s 4 hits,  John Nash and Rickey Nye’s 3 hits, and Odie Butler, Trenton Fuller, Wyatt Gillum, and Felipe Martinez each chipped in 2.   All 9 batters in the lineup had a hit,   as Thomas Andalon, and Justin Hankey each had a hit.  Final score game 1: 7-6
Game 2 saw a pitchers duel.  The Redhawks won the game 1-0.  Trenton Fuller continued his pitching success on the mound picking up his 2nd win of the day allowing only 2 hits and striking out four.   Marshall’s lone run came in the bottom of the 4th as Justin Hankey led off the inning with a triple and scored on a wild pitch.   In addition to Hankey’s triple,  Nye and Butler each contributed singles.
Marshall’s overall record improves to 15-7 with a I8 mark of 5-2.
