The Marshall Ladyhawk Cross Country team took six of the first seven places to easily win the Sturgis Invitational on Saturday, October 17. The team remains unbeaten (66-0) on the season. Winning the meet was Marshall’s Maliyah Gore, who won by 32 seconds in 19:58. Marshall then took the 3rd through 7th places, with Shawn Brophy, Abbie Schoepke, Zariah Ozuzu, Brooke Waito, and Anna Zacharski combining to give Marshall a winning score of 19*. Rounding out the varsity team was Laraya Warnsley, placing 16th.
“To take six of the first seven places in a nine-team field is amazing,” said Coach Wissink. “I can’t remember us scoring that few points in a field this size. And once again, we did it with a key team member missing (Camille DeCola, who was out with an injury). Every meet, we have people step up, and that’s what makes this team special.”
The girls will try to clinch the I-8 League Championship on Tuesday, October 20th, when they host the championship race at Cornwell’s Turkeyville. Races begin at 4:00 p.m.
*Note: In cross country, the lower the score, the better. In order to score a “perfect” score of 15 points, a team must finish their first five runners in all five of the top five places. The Ladyhawks’ score of 19 at Sturgis is their lowest–best–score of the season.
