Marshall @ Vicksburg
On Monday, the Marshall High School Boys Soccer team traveled to Vicksburg and came away with a 6-0 victory.
After earning a corner kick, Marshall was awarded a penalty kick for a foul as the ball was served into the box. Carson Clapper stepped up and converted from the spot for the 3rd time this young season to give Marshall a 1-0 lead. Later in the half, Carson Clapper fed the ball to an overlapping Jaxon Weitting, Weitting sent a cross into the box and Ike Hackworth rose to firmly head the ball into the back of the net. A beautiful team goal to give Marshall a 2-0 lead. After earning another corner kick, Carson Clapper served the ball into the box and in the scrum, Vicksburg knocked the ball into their own net to give Marshall a 3-0 lead going into halftime.
Despite a comfortable 3-0 on the scoreboard, Marshall had not played terrific soccer in the first half. In the second half, Marshall came out and played much better soccer for the second 40 minutes. Early in the 2nd half, Myles Olsen played a pass to Cooper House, who laid it on for Charlie Monawek. Monawek split two defenders with a shot that beat the goalkeeper and ended up in the back of the net. The goal gave Marshall a 4-0 lead and was the 1st of Monawek's varsity career. The assist by Houseman was also his first varsity point. Later in the half, Jonah Kue intercepted a Vicksburg clearing pass, drove toward the net, and fired a shot from 22 yards out that beat the keeper to give Marshall a 5-0 lead. That goal was the 1st of Kue's varsity career as well. Branden Baker finished off the scoring for the day when he rose up to head home a Jaxon Weitting corner kick and give Marshall a 6-0 lead that would be the final score.
Coby Hall made numerous sure-handed saves to earn the shutout in his 1st appearance in goal for Marshall.
With the win, Marshall moves to 1-0-1 on the young season.
Marshall -v- Kalamazoo Central
On Saturday, Marshall traveled to the Kalamazoo Soccer Complex to compete in the
David Ni Invitational Soccer Tournament. In their 1st game they took on the Maroon Giants of Kalamazoo Central. After a scoreless first half, Central scored a well-taken goal from distance to take a 1-0 lead. Despite a late flurry of corner kicks, Marshall was unable to find the net and suffered their 1st defeat of the year.
Marshall -v- Kalamazoo Hackett
In the 2nd game, Marshall played Kalamazoo Hackett. Hackett scored a similarly well struck long range goal to take a 1-0 lead, with the big difference being it was a 1st half goal and they took the 1-0 lead into halftime. Marshall continued to struggle with multiple aspects of the game and gave up 2 second half goals to go behind 3-0. For most of the game, Marshall struggled to generate meaningful offense, and when they did, they met a great save or a shot that was inches wide.
So, Marshall dropped both games and moved to 1-2-1 on the season. Marshall returns to action on Monday when they play their 1st home game of the year against Gull Lake with kickoff scheduled for 6:30pm
