Jackson Northwest @ Marshall
Marshall dropped a tough 1-0 decision to I-8 Conference foe Jackson Northwest last Tuesday evening. Northwest took a first half lead when they were quickest to react to a loose ball in the box after a corner kick. The Northwest player got to the ball first and was able to guide it over the Marshall goalkeeper's head and into the net. The rest of the 1st half and into the 2nd half, Marshall dominated possession, but struggled to create clear cut chances. When they did create quality chances the Northwest goalkeeper was up to the task or Marshall didn't have their finishing boots on and the game ended with Northwest up 1-0.
The loss drops Marshall's record to 4-8-4 overall and 1-2-1 in I-8 conference play.
Marshall @ Harper Creek
For the second straight outing, Marshall felt as though the scoreboard was a little unkind to them as they had played some high quality soccer, but were on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline. Harper Creek beat Marshall 1-0 on Thursday evening at Harper Creek High School. In another deja vu moment to Tuesday night, Marshall made a great start to the game, but was unable to capitalize. On one of their rare chances in the 1st half, Harper was quickest to react to a shot that was saved, but not held, by the Marshall goalkeeper and stab the rebound into the empty net. Marshall continued to play some really good soccer, but also continued to struggle to put the ball in the net. Despite creating more chances than they had on Tuesday night, Marshall's offense was shut out again as Harper held on for a 1-0 win.
With the loss, Marshall drops to 4-9-4 on the net and 1-3-1 in the I-8 Conference.
Holt @ Marshall
Marshal finished off a busy week by hosting Holt High School on Saturday morning. Despite what seemed to be a relatively even 1st half, Holt took a 2-0 lead into the halftime interval on two well struck goals from distance. The scoreless half marked 5 consecutive halves in which Marshall had failed to score a goal despite the fact the overall level of play had been quite good.
Marshall found a way to break out of their funk and came out of the halftime break with a renewed attacking vigor. They broke the scoreless streak when Isaac Hackworth redirected a Trenton Wolkiewicz free kick into the net to make the score 1-2. The goal seemed to lift a weight off the Marshall attack's shoulders as it really brought them to life. Shortly thereafter, Jaxon Weitting intercepted a pass at the top of the box and hit a sharp drive through traffic that left the goalkeeper no chance and tied the score at 2-2. Marshall continued to attack and created several other quality chances, but the score stayed at 2-2. The tie was a welcome result against a quality team after back-to-back 0-1 losses for Marshall.
The win bumps their overall record to 4-9-5.
Marshall @ Hastings
Marshall traveled to Hasting for the final I-8 contest of the season and came away with a 3-0 victory. Marshall played a strong 1st half, limiting Hasting's offense and finding a goal to take a 1-0 lead into halftime. The goal came when Max McCormack fed a through ball to Brandon Baker. Baker calmly slotted the ball past the Hastings goalkeeper and into the net. The assist was the first varsity point of McCormack's career.
After the break, Marshall really took control of the game. They played with much better possession and offensive purpose and made it show on the scoreboard as well. Marshall took a 2-0 lead Jaxon Weitting bent a tasty little ball behind the Hastings defense for Carson Clapper. Clapper beat the keeper to the ball and chipped the bouncing ball over the head of the on-rushing goalkeeper into the net. Carter Clapper played a pass to Myles Olson for a carbon copy of the 2nd goal. This time it was Olson chipping the bouncing ball over the head of the goalkeeper for a 3-0 lead that would be the final score.
Marshall's defense and 3 goalkeepers (Coby Hall, Andrew Root, & Lucas Niemann) combined for the shutout.
The win moves Marshall's record to 5-9-5 overall and 2-3-1 in I-8 play.
Marshall returns to action on Saturday when they host Otsego for the final regular season game of the year. They will honor their 8 seniors with a Senior Day ceremony prior to the game.
