The Marshall girls bowling team travelled to Waterford on Friday for the Division 2 state finals. The ladies bowled eight baker games followed by two regular games in an attempt to qualify for the quarterfinal match play round.
They started off with respectable games of 162 and 165. After a difficult 140 they came alive for a 211. After the one really nice game, the team hit some struggles during the back half of baker play. turning in games of 137, 146, 138 and 139. The bad news was they were falling a bit while the positive side was that noone was running away with it as the scoring pace was fairly low.
The team knew they needed to perform well in the regular games. They did just that! Delilah Creaighton turned in a 168 while Deli Fields had a 159. Kiera London found a groove with a 186 while Olivis Stone and Summer Stone hammered a 189 and 203, respectively. That gave a team total of 904, the best team game of the season. Heading into the final game, the Hawks found themselves in third position.
The scoring fell a bit in the final game, but seemingly did so for everyone. Olivia Stone held steady with a 204 to lead the team and help turn in a team score of 771. That was enough to land third overall and advance to match play.
In the first round, Marshall would face the defending state champions from Swartz Creek. They battled with the Dragons in the best of five match. At the end each team had won two games and tied. In a 6th -10th frame roll off, the Redhawks found Senior Summer Stone on the approach needing an eight count on her fill shot to win the match. She did not disappoint as she got exactly what she needed to vault the Redhawks into the semi finals.
In the Semi finals, they faced Dearborn Divine Child. The Falcons had been the 2nd qualifier. The Hawks knew they would be tough, but found a rhythm that DC was unable to find. Hawks won three games to one and advanced to the finals against perennial power Flint Kearsley.
In the finals, Kearlsey did what they do, they just stayed steady as a team that has been there before would expect. The Redhawks struggled to stay in rhythm and the spare shooting suffered. In the end Kearsley prevailed three games to none.
Marshall brings home a runner up trophy and the pride that they have done something no other team has done at Marshall. D2 state finalist.
