The Marshall Girls Soccer program kicked off their season by splitting two games Saturday, 3/21, at Marshall High School Marshall hosted a multi-team event on Rich Hulkow Field at MCCU Stadium.
In the opener, with frigid temperatures, Marshall lost a 2-0 decision to Waterford-Kettering. A strong Kettering team dominated the opening half as Marshall's defense struggled to be organized enough to contain the Kettering team and the offensive struggled to generate much attack against the consistent Kettering high pressure. Some excellent goalkeeping by Lauren Niemann kept Kettering at bay and Marshall went into halftime with the score tied at 0-0.
Very shortly after kick-off, Kettering opened the scoring with a far-post header from a corner kick. Marshall was able to possess the ball a little better in the 2nd half and did generate a chance or two, but another Kettering goal gave them a 2-0 lead that would be the final score.
In their 2nd game of the day, Marshall continued to show improvement and came away with a 4-1 win over Cadillac. Marshall opened the scoring when Lillian Moore stepped in front of a Cadillac attacker to intercept a pass. She carrier the ball into the attacking third of the final and deposited the ball in the back of the net with a fine finish, a low, firm, driven ball to far the post. Despite continued offensive pressure, Marshall was unable to extend the lead and Cadillac punished them on one of the few chances of the half. Marshall regrouped and came up with an answer of their own when Ollie Rozzell tucked away a nice little finish off an assist from Jordyn St. John. The goal gave Marshall a 2-1 lead they would take into halftime.
In the 2nd half, Cadillac began to tire and Marshall was able to carry even more of the play and created multiple quality chances in the 2nd half. Freshman Ellery Fazekas scored her first career goal when Rozzell released her behind the Cadillac defense and she tucked the ball away to give Marshall a 3-1 lead. Sophomore Lydia Drenth also scored her 1st career varsity goal when she was the quickest to react to a loose ball in the box after a Rozzell corner kick. The goal put Marshall up 4-1 which would be the final score.
Marshall's record now stands at 1-1-0 on the year. They return to action on Monday, 3/23, when they host Edwardsburg at Marshall High School with kickoff scheduled for 6:30pm.
