Marshall Boys Track Athletes Sending Record Number of Athletes to State Meet

Rozell, Dietrich to Represent Girls at State Finals

Marshall's boys had an outstanding day at the regional championship, qualifying athletes in eight individual events and three relays, for a total of 20 spots. It is believed this is a record number for MHS.

The day started out with a bang as the 800 Meter Relay team of Landon Patton, Matt Waito, Zach Hudson and Akin Olapade qualified for the State Meet in a school record time of 1:28.97.  The same foursome also qualified in the 400 Meter Relay, missing the school record by .01 seconds as Akin strained a hamstring 20 meters from the finish line and limped across.  The 1600 Meter team also qualified with senior Ty Winchell and freshman Anthony Ours joining Zach and Hudson.

In the individual events, Jaylen Wharton jump started the boys by throwing the shot put six feet further than his previous PR, with a throw of 49', punching his ticket to the State Finals.  Landon Patton qualified in the 100 Meter Dash with his second place finish, and Matt Waito qualified in the 400 Meter Dash with a new PR of 51.03.  Matt may be the first Marshall athlete to qualify in four events in a single regional final.  Not to be outdone, Zach Hudson ran a PR 15.0 to qualify in the 110 High Hurdles.  Zach is the first MHS athlete to ever qualify in FIVE events, as he had previously qualified in the 300 Hurdles.

The distance runners also enjoyed great success as Ty Winchell qualified in the 800 Meter Run with a time of 1:59.7.  Three time All State runner Abe McHugh qualified in the 1600 and 3200 Meter runs, running a PR 0f 4:23.11 to take second in the 1600, and 9:51 to win the 3200.

Senior Ollie Rozell finished runner up in the 100 Meter Dash to earn her ticket to the State finals, and just missed qualifying in two other events.  She took third in the 200 Meter Dash, and the 400 Meter Relay team missed by .03 seconds.  Freshmen Emily Dietrich, Amiyah Gore, and Kendi Moga also ran on the relay.  Emily also qualified by winning the 300 Meter Hurdles.

Also winning regional medals in the meet were Akin in the 100 and discus, and Brison Brewer in the high jump and long jump.  On the girls side Georgie Schmidt won medals in the high jump, 400 Meter Dash and the 3200 Relay (w/ Pearl Ritter, Gianna DeCola and Alaina Hoffman).  Alaina also medaled in the 800 Meter Run.  Kendi Moga took fourth in the long jump with a PR of 15' 9.25".Throwers Anna Casey and Ana Young both medaled in the discus.

Overall the boys finished third and the girls fifth in the 16 team field.

The State Finals will be run at Hamilton HS on May 30th.

Great job and good luck Redhawks!
