Marshall started the game brightly.  They possessed the ball well and with purpose and, as a result, were creating quality chances.  After several dangerous corner kick opportunities, Marshall was able to capitalize when Kendall Melton converted an Olie Rozell corner kick at the far post to give Marshall a 1-0 lead.  Shortly afterward, Marshall had another dangerous corner-kick and was awarded a penalty kick for a Chelsea foul in the box on the corner kick.  Rozell stepped up and converted the spot kick to give Marshall a 2-0 lead.  Less than 2 minutes later, Chelsea answered when a through ball split the Marshall center backs and Chelsea's dangerous center forward had a breakaway that she calmly slotted into the net.  The goal reduced Marshall's lead to 2-1.  Just past the midway point in the half, Marshall was awarded another penalty kick when Rozell dribbled into the box and was fouled as she tried to shoot.  She again beat the keeper to restore Marshall's 2 goal lead at 3-1.  Marshall was again not able to handle the success and gave up another goal on a long high shot late in the half.  Marshall finished the half on their heels, but kept the scoreline at 3-2 heading into the interval.

 

In the second half, Marshall again started well, holding the ball and creating some chances, including hitting the crossbar.  As the half wore on, Marshall began to struggle with the combination of the heat, injuries, and the Chelsea team's relentlessness.  Chelsea began to have more of the play.  Although Chelsea didn't have tons of quality chances, they finished the game as the team with the upper hand.  Midway through the 2nd half, Chelsea was able to convert from a corner kick to even the score at 3-3.

 

Despite fatigue becoming a big factor for both teams, the rest of the game and two overtime periods played out without another goal.  So, they moved to a penalty kick shootout to decide the outcome.  After the final kick, Chelsea had a 4-3 advantage in penalty kicks converted to give them the victory.

 

Marshall's season ends with a final record of 10-6-2.  They were outright I-8 Champions.
