Marshall hosted Coldwater tonight in a battle of two ranked teams and came away with a 2-1 victory. Coldwater entered the game ranked #15 in Division 2 in the state and Marshall came in at #11 in the latest rankings released Monday. Both teams also entered the game undefeated and tied atop the I8 conference standings.
After a scoreless first half, Marshall opened the scoring when JJ Janofski headed in a Brett Swaton corner kick to give the Redhawks a 1-0 lead. That was quickly followed by a goal from Brett Swaton (assisted by Jake Lyon and Garrett Voigt) which put Marshall up 2-0. Cole Graeber, normally a starter at center back, but playing his 1st ever varsity game in goal came up with one huge save as well several other, more routine saves. Coldwater did manage to pull a goal back on a rocket shot that gave the goalkeeper no chance. Marshall did a terrific job of managing the final 10 minutes of the game to close out the hard fought, but well earned victory.
Coach Morgan said, “The entire team stepped up to help Marshall earn the victory tonight over Coldwater. Everyone gave a little extra to help overcome the fact that our starting goalkeeper was unavailable tonight. I’m proud of the entire group, but I do feel like Cole Graeber, moving from center back to start his 1st varsity game in goal, and Josh Pugh, a freshman moving from forward to start his 1st game at centerback deserve special recognition. This was definitely a team win, but without the brave and selfless efforts of those two, I don’t think we’d have accomplished it”.
With the win, Marshall moves to 2-0-0 in the I8 conference and will remain at least tied for atop the league standings. The win also moves them to 8-1-1 overall on the year. Marshall travels to Parma, MI, on Thursday for another I8 contest with the Western High School Panthers. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30pm.
