The Marshall soccer team bounced back from a season opening defeat to earn their 1st victory of the season tonight. They defeated the visitors from Jackson Northwest by a 4-0 scoreline. With the win, Marshall moves to 1-1-0 on the season and 1-0-0 in the I-8 conference.
After dominating play but struggling to score on Northwest’s excellent goalkeeper, Marshall opened the scoring with a goal-of-the-year candidate from Marco Eshuis. He beat two defenders and sent a low curling shot into the bottom corner of the net. Eshuis was assisted by Carson Tucker on the goal. Later in the half, Josh Pugh received a pass from Jayson Janofski, dribbled past the goalkeeper and scored into the empty net to give Marshall a 2-0 lead they would take into halftime.
In the second half, Josh Pugh again got behind the defense, dribbled past the advancing goalkeeper, and scored into an empty net. This time he was assisted by Evan Markos and Caleb Graeber. Josh Pugh finished off the scoring, and his hat-trick, with the final goal of the game with assists coming from Dominic Dent and Evan Markos.
Nate Turner and Carter Wheeler each played half of the game in goal to split Marshall’s first shutout of the year.
Marshall returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Brandon High School for a non-league game scheduled to kickoff at 11:30am.
