Marshall Varsity vs Jackson High School Win Marshall picked up their 1st win of the season with a strong performance over the visitors from Jackson on Thursday evening. Marshall lost their 1st three games of the year, against strong competition, but had been turning a corner lately and came away with a confidence boosting win. Marshall opened the scoring when a long free kick from Trenton Wolkiewicz was headed back across the face of the goal by Brandon Baker and Rowdy Joseph was there to steer the ball into the net. Later in the half, Joe Grinston received a great pass from Myles Olson with no one to beat but the goalkeeper and Grinston slotted the ball past the keeper and into to the net to give Marshall a 2-0 lead. The goal is the 1st varsity goal of Grinston's career. Less than a minute later, Baker rose above the crowd to get his head on another Wolkiewicz free kick, but this time no one's help was needed as he deposited the header directly into the net for a 3-0 Marshall lead that they would take into halftime. In the second half, Marshall gave a very workmanlike performance. They didn't create as many chances, or goals, that they did in the 1st half, but they didn't allow Jackson a chance to get back into the game. Midway through the half, Baker dispossessed a Jackson player and fed the ball to Joseph. Joseph was in alone with the Jackson goalkeeper and and made no mistake. The goal gave Marshall a commanding 4-0 lead and was Joseph's 2nd 2-goal game in a row. Sam Krueger earned the shutout behind a defense that allowed Jackson very little breathing room. The shutout is Krueger's, and the team's, 2nd on the season. WIth the win, Marshall's record now stands at 1-3-2 on the year and they are unbeaten in their last 3 games. Marshall returns to action on Monday, when they travel to Gull Lake for a non-conference match-up.
