By Bre Johnson | Sep 2, 2026 11:32 PM

Marshall Varsity Volleyball traveled to Portage Central on Wednesday evening for a mini tournament, finishing the night with a 2-1 record after earning wins over Lansing Catholic and Plainwell while dropping a match to host Portage Central. The Redhawks opened the night against Lansing Catholic and, after a slow start, quickly settled into a rhythm and earned a straight-set victory. Marshall then faced Portage Central but struggled to generate consistent offense against the host team. The Redhawks dropped the match in two sets before bouncing back in their final match of the evening. Against Plainwell, Marshall was pushed to three sets but found a way to finish the night with a strong win. The Redhawks stayed steady against a Plainwell team with several powerful attackers and were able to grind out points when they mattered most. Defensively, Emma Ladd had a big night for Marshall, finishing with 41 digs. The Redhawk offense was directed by setters Addie Carden, who recorded 45 assists, and Anna Laditka, who added 35 assists. Marshall’s outside hitters also put together impressive performances. Brynn Johnson finished the night with 34 kills and 36 digs, while Claire Kelly added 20 kills and 30 digs. “We started the night a little slow, and you could tell we were a bit tired from playing hard the night before, but the girls found a rhythm quickly against Lansing Catholic and won that match in two straight sets. “Against Portage Central, we were a little flat and couldn’t find ways to get kills no matter what we tried. They beat us in two straight sets. “We were able to dig deep and beat Plainwell in the last match of the night in three sets. They had some powerful hitters, but we stayed consistent and kept plugging away. Overall, it was a good night of volleyball.”
