On Thursday evening, Marshall hosted Coldwater for the 1st I-8 Conference match-up of the year. Coldwater entered the game as a state-ranked team and Marshall was riding a 3 game (5 game unbeaten) streak. Coldwater came away with a 3-2 victory in a fast-paced, high-intensity game. Marshall opened the scoring when Ben Baker rose above the crowd at the far post to meet a Trenton Wolkiewicz corner kick. Baker's thumping header flew straight into the net to give Marshall a 1-0 lead they would hold until halftime. Less than a minute into the 2nd half, Coldwater was awarded a penalty kick. The Coldwater player converted the kick to tie the score at 1-1. Later in the half, with both teams trading chances, Marshall was awarded a penalty kick for a hand ball in the Coldwater box. Rowdy Joseph stepped up and converted the kick and Marshall regained it's one goal advantage, 2-1. Midway through the half, Marshall went through a stretch where they struggled to get the ball from Coldwater when they did, they struggled to hold on to it well. During that stretch Coldwater scored a corner-kick goal to tie the score at 2-2. Shortly thereafter, Coldwater scored again on a terrific shot from outside the box to give Coldwater a 3-2 lead. Marshall was able to mount a late comeback that included several great scoring chances, including hitting the post with less than 2 minutes to play, but they were unable to convert. So, Coldwater went away 3-2 winners in a great match played at a high level in front of a great crowd. With the loss, Marshall drops to 0-1-0 in I-8 conference play and 3-4-2 overall. Marshall returns to action Saturday when they host Brandon HS.
