Marshall Varsity vs Brandon High School Win Marshall's Boys Soccer team finished off a tough 3 game week with a 4-0 win over the visiting Brandon Black Hawks. Marshall bounced back from a tough disappointing loss to I-8 Conference foe Coldwater on Thursday with a convincing victory. Marshall announced their intentions for the game when Charlie Monaweck opened the scoring less than two minutes after kickoff. Monaweck carried a ball to the top of the box and unleashed a shot that beat the keeper cleanly to give Marshall a 1-0 lead. The goal was the 1st of the season for Monaweck. Marshall continued to play well and create chances without finding the net until just past the twenty minute mark when Max McCormack arrived near the penalty spot as a high ball was coming down. McCormack cleanly stroked an inside of the foot volley into the side netting leaving the keeper no chance and giving Marshall a 2-0 lead. That goal opened the floodgates a little bit as Marshall proceeded to score three goals in the final 18 minutes of the half. Next to get on the scoresheet was Devin Olson. Olson outran the Brandon defense to a loose ball and was dragged down in the box for a penalty kick. Devin took the resulting free kick and gently chipped the ball into the center of the net as the keeper dove to his right...a perfectly executed "Panenka" to give Marshall a 3-0 lead. The goal was the Olson's 1st varsity goal. With only 36 seconds on the clock, Marshall finished the scoring for the half when Carson Clapper scored his first goal of the season by curling a corner kick directly into the net. The "Olympico" goal gave Marshall a 4-0 lead heading into the intermission. In the second half, Marhsall looked like they were playing their 3rd game in 5 days as the play was a little ragged and the legs a little tired. They did, however, manage to maintain the shutout. It is credited to goalkeeper Sam Krueger who wasn't seriously challenged, but was forced to do a good job of keeping things tidy all match. The shutout is the 5th on the season and the 4th in the last 5 games. Despite the loss Coldwater on Thursday, Marshall has now won 4 of its last five games and has only lost once in the last seven games. Marshall's record now stands at 4-4-2. They return to action on Tuesday, when they travel to Pennfield High School for an I-8 Conference match with the Panthers.
