Marshall @ Jackson Northwest Marshall traveled to Jackson Northwest on Thursday (9/24) for an I-8 Conference mstch-up against the Mounties. Marshall played well and came away 8-2 winners to improve to 8-4-2 overall and 3-1 in the league. Marshall came flying out of the gate. They opened the scoring with a corner kick goal less than 2 minutes into the game. Brandon Baker rose up to meet Trenton Wolkiewicz's well-flighted corner kick and head it directly into the net to give Marshall an early 1-0 lead. Less than 90 seconds later, Rowdy Joseph dribbled into the box and was fouled from behind by a defender. Joseph calmly deposited the resultant penalty kick into the net to give Marshall a 2-0 lead. Marshall didn't score again until less than 10 minutes remained in the 1st half, when Baker again got his head on a corner kick. This time he headed it back across the face of goal where Myles Olson got his head on the ball before Max McCormack stabbed it into the net to give Marshall a 3-0 lead. With just under 4 minutes remaining in the half, Myles Joseph was taken down in the penalty box. He converted the penalty kick to give Marshall a 4-0 lead going into halftime. In an unusual twist, all four of Marshall's goals were from set.pieces. In the second half, Marshall continued to apply pressure. That pressure paid off just over ten minutes into the half when the Wolkiewicz - Baker corner connection worked again. Baker scored his 2nd of the day and Wolkiewicz got his 3rd assist. Leading 5-0, Marshall finally scored from the run of play, when Cooper Houseman scored his 1st of the year (in his 1st game after a long injury lay-off) with assists going to Charlie Monaweck and Max McCormack. Marshall scored again when senior exchange student Pietro Rezzadori scored his 1st varsity goal by heading home a Wolkiewicz free kick from the wing for Marshall's 7th goal of the day. Wolkiewicz wrapped up the scoring, and his huge day by scoring directly from a free kick himself. Marshall did concede twice during the 2nd half to make the final score 8-2. The win is Marshall's 5th consecutive victory and 8th in the last 9 games. Marshall @ Grand Rapids Northview Marshall's boys soccer wrapped a long, successful week. They traveled to Grand Rapids on Saturday (9/26) for their 3rd away game of the week. They defeated the Wildcats of Grand Rapids Northview in a non-conference affair to complete the week at 3-0-0. Marshall took care of business in a very professional manner on the way to their 4-0 win. It is Marshall's 6th consecutive win and their 9th in the last 10 games. After the victory, their record sits at 9-4-2 on the season. For the 2nd game in a row, Marshall got on the board very early as Trenton Wolkiewicz's corner kick was met at the far post by Brandon Baker. Baker's header flew back across the face of the goal where Max McCormack was located and McCormack headed the ball into the net to give Marshall a 1-0 lead less than 2 minutes into the game. About 10 minutes later, Myle's Olson won the ball and immediately played a through ball that put Rowdy Joseph in behind the defense. As the GR Northview goalkeeper advanced to try to get to the ball, Joseph got there 1st and poked the ball past the keeper and watched it roll into the net to give Marshall a 2-0 lead. Despite creating some quality chances, Marshall was unable to score again and took a 2-0 lead into the half. With just over 8 minutes played in the 2nd half, Marshall got on the board again. This time Wolkiewicz's free kick went directly into the net. The goalkeeper was worried about Marshall players heading it, but no one was able to get to the ball and then the goalkeeper had no chance to recover in time to keep the ball out of the net. Carson Clapper wrapped up the scoring with just over 25 minutes remaining in the 2nd half. Goalkeeper Sam Krueger's punt bounced once in front of the Northview back line and Clapper headed the ball to himself behind the backline. In alone with the keeper, he calmly slotted home to give Marshall a 4-0 lead that would be the final score. Aside from his assists, goalkeeper, Sam Krueger, had a relatively quiet day behind the excellent Marshall defense led by Baker and Wolkiewicz. Krueger gets the shutout. It is his 7th shutout of the season. Marshall returns to action on Tuesday (9/29) when they host I-8 Conference rival Harper Creek in a game with big conference and state tournament implications. The game will be played on Rich Hulkow Field at MCCU Stadiumwith kickoff scheduled for 7pm.
