The Marshall boys soccer team hosted Harper Creek on Tuesday night (9/29) and came away with a convincing 3-0 victory. Both teams came into the game with 3-1-0 and tied for 2nd second in I-8 Conference play. Marshall came out playing strong soccer. It took over twenty minutes, but Marshall was eventually rewarded for the multiple chances they created. Miles Davies played a ball into Joe Grinston's feet. Grinston was able to turn and play Myles Olson in behind the Harper defense. Olson beat the goalkeeper to the ball and poked it past him into the net to give Marshall a 1-0 lead that they would take into halftime. In the second half, Marshall continued to control the majority of play. Early in the half, they gained a greater measure of control over the game, when Carson Clapper played a cross-field ball to Max McCormack's feet that put him in a one-on-one situation with the Harper defender. McCormack beat the defender wide and fired a sharp, low shot towards the far post. The Harper goalkeeper did well to get his hand to the ball and pushed it wide of goal, but Rowdy Joseph was on hand to fire the rebound into the net and give Marshall a 2-0 lead. Midway through the second half, Trenton Wolkiewicz launched a long ball from deep in his own end, over the top of the Harper defense that put Carson Clapper in alone with the Harper keeper. Clapper calmly rounded the keeper and deposited the ball into the net to give Marshall a 3-0 lead and cap the scoring. With the win, Marshall improves to 10-4-2 overall and 4-1-0 in I-8 Conference play. Marshall has now won 7 consecutive games and 10 of their last 11. During a relatively quiet night, goalkeeper Sam Krueger came up with a huge save midway through the 2nd half to help preserve the shutout behind a Marshall defense that largely kept the Harper attack at bay. It is the 8th shutout of the season for Krueger and the Marshall defense. Marshall returns to action next Tuesday (10/6) when they host Hastings in the final I-8 Conference game of the year. They will be honoring their Seniors prior to the game with the Senior Day ceremony beginning at approximately 6:15pm and kickoff scheduled for 6:30pm.
