McHugh, Dillon Lead Redhawk Cross Country at Dexter

On a cool and crisp morning custom made for cross country the Marshall cross country teams traveled to Hudson Mills Metro Park in Dexter for the prestigious Gabriel Richard Invitational.  The boys lined up first with 21 other teams, hoping to finish on the podium despite missing Jack Bidwell who was on his official visit to the University of Colorado.

Despite a star studded field, sophomore sensation Abe McHugh quickly moved to the front and never let up.  McHugh ran a stunning 15:39 to win the race, running the fastest time in all of division two for sophomores and the 13th fastest time in DII overall. Reece Davis took 8th in a fine 16:10 despite being under the weather. Clark Erwin also medaled by taking 20th in a new PR of 17:09.  Ty Winchell and Cam Weers rounded out the scoring in 17:47 and 17:49.

"We were hoping to use this meet as a final warmup before league, regionals and State" said Coach Wissink.  "Although we missed the podium by one spot, the guys ran tough and smart.  It was funny watching the race because people really look forward to watching Jack run, and here's a Marshall kid out front that they know isn't Jack.  I was really proud of how we ran, and Abe keeps elevating his status as an elite runner.  Reece only missed his PR by eight seconds despite being about 75% healthy, and our three, four, five guys came through."

On the girl's side freshman Alaina Dillon ran a new PR to take tenth place in 20:02, a 58 second improvement.  Alaina Hoffman lowered her season PR to take 62nd in 22:07.  The only other Marshall finishers were Adi Domingo (22:27) and Jenna Lumsden (23:11).

"We're dealing with some injuries that have really derailed our momentum", said Coach Wissink.  "We had two girls not start and one drop out.  I've never had a team not register a team score, so that's very disappointing.  We only have a few days to figure out how to get ready for the league championship, but I'm sure the girls will give it everything they have when we get to Hastings."
