On Saturday, December 14, the Marshall girls and boys bowling teams competed in the newly named Sue Hutchings Mixed Scotch Doubles at Marshall Lanes. This is an event that was started by the program's founding coach, Sue Hutchings. She retired as the bowling coach at the end of the 2023 season. Now, as Sue prepares to retire completely, Coach Kingsbury and Coach Stealy honored her contribution to youth and high school bowling by making her the tournament namesake. Moving forward, no matter what bowling center Marshall uses to compete, the tournament will continue and remain named for her.

Bob Hutchings said, "This is an honor well deserved. Sue loves high school bowling, Thanks to those responsible for this honor and for her former athletes and coaches who showed up for this dedication. Bowling has been good to us. Thank you, Marshall."

Sue was completely surprised with this honor and after the tournament thanked everyone on Facebook with the following statement: "I am so honored. What a complete surprise. There was a great group of dedicated coaches at the lanes today and it is always a joy to reconnect with them. I was also very touched to see so many MHS bowling alumni there, as well. High School Bowling has brought me so much joy. Thank you. Jim and Dave, thank you from the bottom of my heart. The program is in good hands."

Once competition was under way, the Marshall teams of Ember Boughton/Leeland Murphy and Summer Stone/Xavier Vandemoortel gave Marshall two of the top eight qualifiers on the day. Boughton/Murphy were the leaders as Stone/Vandemoortel qualified third.

In match play Boughton/Murphy lost in their first match to one of three Lumen Christi pairs to make the top eight while Stone/Vandemoortel won their match against Olivet. In the Semi-final match against Sturgis, Stone and Vandemoortel lost by a mere three pins to the eventual tournament champion. Stone/Vandemoortel went on to win the consolation match against Hastings to finish third on the day.

All-in-all, it was another good day on the lanes as all of the Marshall bowlers gained valuable experience in a tournament setting.

Both teams go on the road Thursday to face Eaton Rapids at Char-Lanes in Charlotte at 2:30 PM.
