The Marshall Redhawk bowling teams traveled to Midway Lanes in Coldwater for a singles tournament on Sunday December 29. The event had 22 girls and 31 boys. Bowlers bowled four games of qualifying followed by a cut to the top six for match play.
For the Marshall boys, Leeland Murphy was the man of the day. His day started slowly with games of 142 and 164 followed with a 172. Going into the final qualifying game, he needed a big score as he found himself well off the cut line. He did exactly that, firing 278 to finish at 756 and take the 6th spot and advance to match play.
In match play, Murphy ran into a hot opponent from Bronson that had 231 and 188 for a 416 total. Leeland had a 157 and 188 for 345 and a 6th place finish.
For the girls, Summer Stone called her shot. She told Coach Stealy prior to the start of the day that she felt like she could win the tournament. Well, she backed it up. In qualifying, she produced games of 180, 194, 142 and 181 for a 697 total, good enough for second and a first round bye in match play.
In match play she first faced an opponent from Coldwater. Her opponent had games of 151 and 126 for 277. Stone secured the match with games of 153 and 187, totaling 340.
In the championship match, Stone faced the top qualifier, she was from Hastings. The first game tilted toward Stone as the bowlers had scores of 181 and 175. In the second game Stone had a 180 while her opponent had a 156, giving Stone the well earned championship by a total score of 361 - 331.
The Redhawks will have another shot in a singles competition at Bronson on December 31.
