The Marshall Redhawk bowlers headed to Strike Zone in Bronson on New Years Eve for a singles event hosted by Sturgis. This event, like Sunday's, was a four game qualifier with the top eight boys and top eight girls moving into match play. Bowlers would be seeded into brackets for two game, total pinfall matches.
Summer Stone and Ember Boughton both made match play for the girls qualifying third and fourth, respectively with a 656 (156, 179, 151, 170) and 655 (125, 151, 170, 209). Stone was steady all day while Boughton overcame a tough start and improved in chunks each game. Dalilia Fields and Olivia Stone finished twelfth and thirteenth just outside of the match play cut.
During match play, Stone won her first match 356 (179, 177) - 340 (182, 158) over Sturgis' Khara Kimes. Boughton fell to Nikk Maurer of Edwardsburg' 340 (180, 160) - 325 (163, 162) thanks to some unfortunate carry and splits. Stone moved on to face Aubrey Rowson of Portage Northern. She won that match 367 (210, 157) - 332 (169, 163) setting up the championship match with Bronson's Morgan McConn, the top qualifier on the day. This match came down to the tenth frame of game two. Stone missed the 3-9 in the tenth to open the door for McConn. McConn needed a spare and pin count to secure the victory, but a nasty 7-10 split turned the victory over to Stone. Overall, a very good day for the girls.
The boys had Xavier Vandemoortel and Ayden George move into match play with 793 (213, 214, 178 188) and 742 (173, 143, 213, 213). Vandemoortel tied for the top qualifying position, but took the second seed based on having the lower score in the final game of qualifying. Ayden was the seven seed. This meant there would be a Marshall/Marshall match in the first round. Vandemoortel took the early lead with a 178 to George's 162. In game two, Vandemoortel turned in a 170 while Geaorge caught fire and rolled a 233 to secure the victory, 395 - 348,
George moved on to the next round to face Aiden Cooper of Portage Northern, Well, that's where his day ended in a very tight match, 395 (162, 233) - 385 (174, 211). Great day for George with a fourth place finish while Vandemoortel earned a seventh place, also a very good day. Additionally, Marshall had Leeland Murphy and Ridge Novak show well, too. They tied for ninth with each having a 702 series.
Marshall has one more event before getting into conference play next week. They will co-host the Battle of the Baker with Pennfield at M-66 on Sunday, January 4.
