The Marshall Freshman Boys Basketball team competed in their final game of the season on Thursday, against the Coldwater Cardinals. Marshall knew going into this game that it was going to be one of the hardest matchups of the entire season, and it certainly was.
The game started with Marshall able to jump out to a quick lead on the Cardinals, the back and forth game play was exciting to watch as both teams were attacking the rim and fighting for defensive stops. The Redhawks were able to take an 11-7 lead into the 2nd quarter that saw the Cardinals hit some big shots and start to pull away taking the lead 13-17 into halftime. Marshall was able to battle back in the 3rd quarter and take the lead 23-22 going into the 4th. It looked like anyone’s game at this point, and the pressure and intensity in the stands was reaching a high level for a Freshman game. The 4th quarter saw Marshall build an 8 point lead quickly, only for the Cardinals to battle back and cut it 2 points with under 30 seconds left. Marshall was able to put some pressure on the ball and deny several shots and open passes, until the ball reached an open Cardinal player who hit a game winning 3 pointer at the buzzer, sending the young Redhawks home without the win for the first and last time this season, final 34-35. It was a remarkable run from the Freshman who left it all on the court.
Lucas Niemann 8 pts, Eli Warner 6 pts, Calvin Fultz 5 pts, Cooper Houseman, Myles Olson and Jakier Bates 3 pts, Matt Ryan, Jack Beattie, and Joe Grinston 2 pts.
Final Record 20-1 and 9-1 in the I8 conference
