The Marshall Girls Soccer team competed in the Sportsfest Tournament at Marshall High School on Saturday.  Marshall defeated Trenton in the tournament opener by a final score of 3-2 to advance to the final.  In the final, Marshall fought valiantly, but was unable to overcome a very strong Stevensville-Lakeshore team, losing by a final score of 0-1.

In the opener, Marshall played a terrific game.  They took a 1st half lead when freshman Nyla Whittaker scored the 1st varsity goal of her career when she was able to pounce on a miskick by the Trenton goalkeeper and put it in the net to punish the mistake.

Early in the 2nd half, Marshall gave up a goal to Trenton to tie the score at 1-1.  Marshall quickly bounced back and re-took the lead on a goal by Ollie Rozell.  As the half was coming to a close, Trenton was able to score a free-kick goal with less than 10 seconds to play to tie the score and send the game into a penalty kick shootout.  Zadie Zuelhke, Jordyn St. John, and Lola Saber converted their spot kicks and goalkeeper Megan Rehfeldt came up with 2 huge saves and after the initial 5 kickers the pk score  was 3-3.  So, it went to extra shooters.  With the 6th pk shot, Tessa Miller scored and Rehfeldt came up with another save to give Marshall the win.

In the championship game, Marshall faced a very strong Stevensville-Lakeshore team that had advanced to the final by defeating DeWitt by a 2-1 scoreline.  Lakeshore's skill and movement proved to be a handful and Marshall spent most of the match defending.  They defended terrifically though limiting Lakeshore to very few quality chances and trying to counter-attack from time to time.  Marshall's defense held out until less than 2 minutes remained in the game when Lakeshore's winger dribbled into the middle of the field and curled an excellent shot into the side netting.  An excellent goal and one that won Lakeshore the tournament.

With the results, Marshall moves to 4-3 on the year.  They will return to action on Monday when they travel to Vicksburg for a non-conference match.
