Marshall @ Vicksburg
The Marshall girls soccer team traveled to Vicksburg on Monday evening. The game didn't start well with Marshall giving up a relatively soft goal less than a minute into the contest to go into an early 0-1 hole. Marshall responded by waking up and getting into a good game with a good opponent. Late in the half, Vicksburg scored an excellent goal as a winger cut into the middle on the dribble and curled a terrific shot from outside the box into the far side netting. The goal gave Vicksburg a 2-0 lead, but Marshall did not hang their heads. They dug in and got a goal back before halftime. Lola Saber won a ball from a Vicksburg defender out wide and sent a long cross into the box. The cross floated over the defenders head and landed nicely for Lillian Moore to control and slot past the advancing keeper to make the score 2-1 heading into halftime.
In the 2nd half, Marshall came out flying. Unfortunately they missed a great chance to level the score less than a minute into the half. Before 5 minutes had been played, however, they did level the scoreline at 2-2. Sarah Couch played a ball to the feet of Lillian Moore at midfield. Moore turned, pushed the ball past the centerback and outpaced the entire Vicksburg defense before, again, calmly slotting home to tie the score. Despite playing relatively well after evening the score, Marshall did unfortunately proceed to concede 3 corner kick goals in the 2nd half. The final score was 5-2 Vicksburg.
The loss made Marshall's record 4-4-0 on the year.
Coldwater @ Marshall
The Marshall girls soccer team opened their I-8 Conference Campaign on Thursday when the Coldwater Cardinals visited Marshall's soccer stadium. Despite not playing particularly attractive or efficient soccer in the 1st half, Marshall was able to take a 2-0 lead into the intermission. Freshman Alaina Dillon, opened the scoring when she was first to a cross in the box and knocked it past the goalkeeper to give Marshall the 1-0 lead. Lillian Moore and Anaya Burghdorf supplied the assists on the goal. Burghdorf got in on the fun, by bagging a goal of her own. After Ollie Rozell sent a corner kick into the box, Jordyn St. John got her head to it and it landed at Burghdorf's feet. Burghdorf's shot floated over the goalkeeper's head and into the back of the net to give Marshall a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
In the 2nd half, Marshall played much better soccer. Connecting passes and dominating possession and territory. Despite better play and many more quality chances, they were only able to find the net once. Dillon bagged her brace when she was again first to get to a cross. This time Nicole Ladd fed a nice pass to Lola Saber who crossed the ball into a dangerous area and Dillon reacted 1st, beating the goalkeeper and giving Marshall a 3-0 lead that would be the final score.
Goalkeeper Megan Rehfeldt went the distance in goal behind a strong defensive performance that required her to do miminal work for the shutout. The shutout was the 4th of the season for Rehfeldt and the team.
With the win Marshall opens the I-8 Conference season with a 1-0-0 record. They also moved to 5-4-0 overall on the season.
Holt @ Marshall
On Saturday, the Marshall girls soccer team hosted Holt for a non-conference contest and came away with a hard-fought 1-0 victory.
Playing some of their best soccer of the year thus far against a quality opponent, Marshall scored shortly before halftime to take a 1-0 lead into intermission. After creating many quality chances throughout the half, Ollie Rozell floated a great corner kick into the box with less than 2 minutes to play in the half. Sarah Couch met the ball in the box with a header that beat the goalkeeper and bounced into the net for her 1st career varsity goal.
In the second half, Marshall didn't create as many quality scoring chances, but continued to play some really good soccer. They also limited Holt's chances for most of the half. After the game was delayed for a Holt head injury, Holt had a late flurry of offensive activity and Marshall had to defend 3 consecutive corner kicks. They were able to do so successfully, in part due to Alaina Hoffman clearing one ball off the goalline to avoid a Holt game-tying goal. Holt was unable to break through and Marshall was still up by a goal when the clock struck 0:00.
Goalkeeper Megan Rehfeldt and the defense earned their 2nd consecutive shutout and 5th on the year. Rehfeldt was active and inspired confidence all game long. The win is Marshall's 2nd consecutive win and raises Marshall's overall record to 6-4-0.
Marshall returns to action on Wednesday of next week when they travel to Pennfield for another I-8 conference contest.
