Game 1: Marshall traveled to NW on Tuesday to complete the first game of their rained out doubleheader. Trailing 5-1 in the 4th inning, we weren’t able to get momentum turned and lost 8-3. Bella Ryan homered and Gwen Beach collected 2 hits. Layne Churchill went the distance giving up 8 runs on 8 hits with 7 strikeouts. 

 

Game 2: Marshall needed to win in order to secure a conference championship. It took 9 innings but we came away with a hard fought 6-4 win! Churchill was outstanding in the circle, giving up 4 runs on 8 hits with 14 strikeouts. Bella Ryan hit a huge 3 run homer (her 12th) in the 4th inning following a single from Brielle Kelly and a fielders choice ground ball from Addison Carden. The homer put us ahead 3-2. NW would get one back in the 5th on a sac fly to left fielder Lauren Lewis. However, Lewis’s throw to Gwen Beach gave Beach a chance to make an unbelievable diving tag on a baserunner trying to tag from 2nd to 3rd. With the score still tied 3-3 in the bottom of the 7th, Churchill worked out of a bases loaded jam with a strikeout and a ground out to take us to extra innings. In the 8th, Lauren Lewis sacrificed a runner to 3rd and Brielle Kelly hit a sacrifice fly to left scoring a run and giving us the 4-3 lead. NW would add a run in the 8th, pushing us to another extra inning. We loaded the bases after an error and an intentional walk to Bella Ryan. With one out, Churchill came through with a line drive single to right field scoring 2 runs. In the bottom of the 9th with a two run lead, Churchill shut the door with a strikeout and a double play to end it.
