Coldwater @ Marshall
Marshall hosted Coldwater on Thursday, 5/22, in an MHSAA girls soccer 1st round district tournament game. Marshall came away with a 2-0 win to advance to the district semi-finals against Jackson (Parma) Western.
Marshall dominated play throughout the 1st half, but was unable to find the final pass or get any shots past the Coldwater goalkeeper. Early in the 2nd half, the same pattern continued as Marshall piled on pressure only to be let down by their finishing or frustrated by the Coldwater goalkeeper. Finally, an alert play from Marshall's Ollie Rozell broke the deadlock. After Coldwater was whistled for a foul just outside the 18 yard box, Rozell quickly got the and fired the free kick into the net. The quick free kick caught Coldwater completely by surprise. The defense was unorganized and the goalkeeper wasn't ready for the free kick as it flew past her into the net. Later in the half, Marshall struck again when a Rozell corner kick found its way to Jordyn St. John. St. John controlled the ball nicely, made a nifty turn, and crisply fired the ball into the far corner giving the goalkeeper no chance and Marshall a 2-0 lead.
That would be all the scoring on the day. Megan Rehfeldt went the distance in goal for Marshall to earn the shutout. It was her 8th shutout on the year.
With the win, Marshall's record improves to 10-8-2 on the season and they advance to face conference rival Jackson (Parma) Western in the district semi-final on Tuesday with kickoff scheduled for 5pm.
Jackson (Parma) Western @ Marshall
Marshall hosted Jackson (Parma) Western in a girls soccer district semi-final match-up on Tuesday evening. The teams had met earlier in the season in league play with Western coming away deserved 3-1 victors. Although the game played out much differently, Western, again, prevailed; this time by a 1-0 scoreline ending Marshall's season.
Marshall played a strong 1st half in which, while not dominant, they had the better of the chances and the possession. Neither team was able to find the net and the game went to halftime scoreless. The 2nd half continued the way the first had ended with Marshall playing good soccer and being on the front foot, but not able to make it count on the scoreboard. Past the midway point of the half, Western was able to get one of their few quality chances of the game and they converted it to give them a 1-0 lead. Marshall continued to attack and had several good chances as the clock wound down, but they were unable to find the back of the net. So, Western prevailed 1-0 and advanced to the district final game against Adrian on Friday evening and Marshall's season came to an end.
The loss dropped Marshall's record for the year to 10-9-2.
